Kazuko Matsuoka and Her Translation of Shakespeare’s Plays

Profile of Kazuko Matsuoka

Born in 1942 in Xinjing (Changchun), in the former Manchuria. Graduated from Tokyo Woman’s Christian University, Department of English and American Literature. Completed the master’s course at the University of Tokyo. Translator and theatre critic. Professor Emeritus, Tokyo Medical and Dental University. From 1993, she spent 28 years translating all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays and completed the 33 volumes of Chikuma Bunko’s Complete Works of Shakespeare. For this achievement, in 2021, she was awarded the 58th Japanese Translation Culture Award, the 69th Kan Kikuchi Award, the 75th Mainichi Publishing Culture Award (Planning Category), the 2021 Asahi Award, and the 14th Yuushi Odashima/Drama Translation Awards Special Prize. In 2022, she received the 19th Tsubouchi Shoyo Award. Her major publications include Shakespeare in All Seasons (Chikuma Bunko), In-depth Reading of Shakespeare (Shincho Bunko), and Introduction to Shakespeare by Reading With ‘Objects’ (Chikuma Bunko).
