Kazuko Matsuoka and Her Translation of Shakespeare’s Plays

William Shakespeare

On April 26, 1564, he was baptised in the Church of England, Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon. He was a playwright and poet who was active during the English Renaissance period (around the 15th to the 17th century) when theatrical culture flourished. He was active as a resident writer at the Globe Theatre in Southwark on the south bank of the Thames in London. He worked on a wide range of genres such as history plays, comedy, tragedy, and romance. Presently, it is generally believed that he created 37 plays. Created about 400 years ago, Shakespeare’s plays are loved all over the world even in the present day through stage performances, movies, operas, ballets, paintings, manga, and animation. There are also records that he was a theatre company shareholder and worked as an actor.
